Year 11 HMRC Work Experience

This term, some of our Year 11 pupils had an amazing opportunity to take part in a series of work‑experience sessions at HMRC Nottingham (HM Revenue & Customs). Over several visits, pupils explored what HMRC does as an organisation and discovered the wide range of roles within the department. Staff members shared their experiences and insights, giving our pupils a real look into life inside HMRC.

The sessions were hands‑on and interactive from the very start. Pupils took part in a mock court case based on a real legal scenario, the classic debate: “Are Jaffa Cakes a cake or a biscuit?” They also got involved in mock job interviews, where they had the chance to put HMRC staff in the hot seat and practise key interview techniques. Alongside this, they enjoyed practical activities including item authentication, valuations, and even a taste of property surveying.
As well as learning about the inner workings of HMRC, pupils had the chance to grow their employability skills, communication, teamwork, confidence, and problem‑solving, all of which will support them in their future career paths.
FUEL would like to give a huge thank‑you to the entire team at HMRC for offering such an incredible experience. We’re already looking forward to taking part in the programme again in 2027.
We are incredibly proud to say that every pupil behaved brilliantly throughout and represented FUEL with maturity and enthusiasm. A special congratulations goes to one of our pupils who received the Star of the Programme award, a fantastic achievement!
