Stay Smart Online: Gaming & Social Media Safety

Online games and social media can be a lot of fun — they’re great places to connect with friends, learn new skills, and share creativity. But just like the real world, it’s important to know how to stay safe and make smart choices.

Let’s explore five key facts and tips every young person should know when gaming or using social media — especially here in Nottingham.

1. Not Everyone Online Is Who They Say They Are

In 2024, over half of online grooming reports in Nottinghamshire started through gaming or chat apps. Some people pretend to be your age or share your interests to gain your trust. Stay safe: Never share personal details like your real name, address, or school. If someone asks, stop chatting and tell a trusted adult.

2. Check the Age Ratings

Every game and social media app has an age rating for a reason. Games like Fortnite (12+) or Call of Duty (18+) and apps like TikTok (13+) include content that might not be suitable for younger players. Stay safe: Always check with a parent, carer, or teacher before downloading or joining a new app or game.

3. Keep Your Private Life… Private

It’s exciting to share wins or selfies, but personal info can spread fast online. Stay safe: Don’t post photos that show your school details, street name, or personal information. Use privacy settings to control who can see your content.

4. Look Out for Bullying or Mean Behaviour

Cyberbullying can happen in chats, DMs, or even in-game messages. It’s never okay and you don’t have to face it alone. Stay safe: Block, mute, or report anyone being unkind. Then talk to a teacher or parent so they can help you take action.

5. Think Before You Click

Scams and fake links often pop up in chats, giveaways, or “free coin” offers. Stay safe: Never click strange links or download files sent by strangers. They could contain viruses or steal information.
