🎶 Music, Real Stories & Positive Choices
At FUEL, we believe that some of the most powerful lessons happen when young people hear real stories from real people.
Recently, we organised a special music event with an important message: helping our young people understand the realities and consequences of gang violence, crime and negative influences, while showing them that there is always another path.
🎤 From the streets to the stage
We were lucky enough to welcome Eric Mumba, who knows first-hand what it is like to grow up surrounded by gang culture and difficult circumstances.
Growing up on London's Broadwater Farm Estate, he experienced the realities of the area during a time when gang culture and violence were prominent. He shared his personal story with our pupils, including the challenges he faced and the people who helped him turn his life around.
Today, his life looks very different.
He writes, performs and records music, particularly rap, and now pastors a church in Leeds where he supports young people who may be facing some of the same challenges he once did.
His message was simple but powerful: your circumstances do not have to determine your future.
🎵 Music brought the message to life
And, of course, what better way to connect with our young people than through music?
The pupils were soon bopping along, listening to the music and engaging with the story behind it. What made the session particularly powerful was seeing them connect with someone who had experienced these challenges himself
and had come through the other side.
There was plenty of music, plenty of energy and, most importantly, plenty of conversation.
đź’ More than just a concert
This wasn't simply a music session. It was an opportunity for our young people to think about the choices they make, the people they surround themselves with and the direction they want their lives to take.
We were especially pleased to hear that some pupils went home and told their parents and carers all about the man they had met, someone who had grown up on a challenging estate and had gone on to build a completely different life for himself. That's exactly the kind of message we want to leave with our young people.

🌟 Looking to the future
We want to continue bringing our young people opportunities like this. Using music, real-life experiences and inspirational stories to open conversations that really matter.
By giving our pupils positive role models and showing them the possibilities that exist beyond negative influences, we hope to encourage them to make positive, safe and informed choices both in school and out in the community.
Who knows? The words they heard during this session might just come back to them at a moment in the future when they need them most.
