The BTEC Level 1 Sport course provides learners with a broad understanding of health-related fitness, sports, and exercise. It helps develop practical and theoretical knowledge while also fostering key skills in communication, teamwork, planning, and leadership. Learners gain both technical and interpersonal skills relevant to careers in sport, recreation, and fitness.

Content

Learners will study a range of practical and theoretical topics, including Fitness for Sport and Exercise, Practical Sports Performance, Training for Personal Fitness, and Leading Sports Activities.

The course combines hands-on participation with learning to plan, lead, and evaluate sporting activities, enabling learners to develop teamwork and leadership skills in a real-world context.

Assessment

Assessment combines internal coursework with external examinations. Students build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating practical skills and applied knowledge, alongside two externally set written examinations to test theoretical understanding.

This course is suitable for learners who have an interest in sport, fitness, and physical activity and are considering a career in sports, coaching, fitness instruction, or related fields. It complements GCSE study and provides a vocational pathway into the sport sector.

Progression opportunities

Completion of this course allows learners to progress to further education, apprenticeships, or employment within the sport, fitness, and recreation industries. Opportunities include Level 2/3 sport qualifications, coaching or fitness apprenticeships, and entry-level roles in sports clubs, leisure centres, or community programs.

With further study, learners can progress to positions in coaching, sports science, physiotherapy, or PE teaching, to name a few.
